The Department ofAnaesthesia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital provides anaesthetic services forapproximately 13000 cases per year. All adult non-obstetric specialties are covered including neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery. The Department has a large Day of Surgery Admission program and Day Procedure Unit, supported by an outpatient Anaesthesia Pre-Admission Clinic. The Acute Pain Service sees over 2800 patients per year. The Department has a particular interest in regional anaesthesia and the use ofultrasound imaging for nerve blocks, vascular access and transthoracic echocardiography.

The Department has a large anaesthesia training role (see under Training) and teaches medical students from the University of Western Australia and Notre Dame University. In-house medical simulation is offered to all trainees and students, and there is a comprehensive teaching and continuing medical education program. Although we are primarily a clinical department, many of our staff members are involved in clinical research projects. Recent publications and presentations (listed in our annual reports) indicate some of our current research interests.
